Mystics
and Prophets Through the ages there have been individuals who have spent most of their lives communicating with God. Elizabeth O'Connor, in Search for Silence, defines a mystic as a person who, in searching, experiences union or direct communication with God or ultimate reality. Mysticism is the science or art of spiritual life. When someone by accident or design uncovers what they believe to be ultimate truth they are in the realm of the mystic. Mystical experiences have sparked most major religions. Mysticism is at the core of Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. The mystical experience is so powerful that it rarely occurs without changing a person and those around him or her. Contact with absolute truth is a deeply moving experience. As religious movements spring from these experiences, mysticism takes on an enormous importance in the development of society (McDowell and Stewart 1989). Many authors have expressed the idea that mystical experiences change the world. Wayne Oates in The Psychology of Religion 1973 states, "One cannot simply write these experiences off as an aberration in the constitutions of a few people, as attempts of sick souls to heal themselves by autosuggestion" (p. 121). These individuals are changing the course of history. William Wainwright in Mysticism: A Study of Its Nature, Cognitive Value and Moral Implications 1981 states, "There are good, if not conclusive reasons for believing that some mystical experiences are veridical, and the claims which are built into them are true." Communication with God does not seem to be confined to one religion or worldview. The seeds of the mystic can be found in every religion and society. As Radhakrishman in Eastern Religions and Western Thought 1940, states, "there is one truth, but many different ways of expressing it. The differences in religions come about because of the different environments in which ultimate truth is expressed." All people seem to be able to communicate with God, who comes to people in widely different cultural backgrounds. The experience of the mystic is influenced by previous experience, but there are startling similarities among all mystical experiences. "The visual and auditory experiences of persons from different cultures, with diverse social backgrounds and different psychological make ups, are often quite similar" (Wainwright 1981p. 88). "There is no such thing as mysticism in the abstract, that is to say, a phenomenon or experience which has no particular relation to other religious phenomena" (Scholem 1990 p. 539). The mystical experience must happen to a person and each person has a different set of cultural experiences. Attempts to limit mystical experience to any one religion are futile. God is too big for that. Remember that God is inviting everyone to come to Him, not just the people from one religion or culture. “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism, but accepts men from every nation who fear Him and do what is right” (Acts 10:34). The experience of God is found in many religious systems. "One may find in all races and in all traditions both the capacity for contemplative experience and the fact of its realization even on a very pure level. This capacity and its realization are therefore implicit in all the great religious traditions, whether Asian or European, whether Hindu, Buddhist, Moslem, or Christian” (Merton 1961). Each mystic is totally unique. If he's a Christian, God comes to him through this belief system. If he is a follower of Buddha, God comes to him through this belief system (Underhill, 1974.) Members of one religion should not reject mystical experiences from another faith, they should hold up their own experience. Christians should encourage members of other religions and hold up the story of Christ. Mother Teresa said, “I love all religions, but I love mine the best.” Pope John Paul II said, “Thus, instead of marveling at the fact that Providence allows such a great variety of religious, we should be amazed at the number of common elements found within them,” (John Paul II 1994 p. 82).
